Plan

Jokes rarely imprint. Heard or seen,
a ripple bows my lips and makes
my cheeks rise briefly. But when

I was twenty, a cartoon
marked my soul. Two
prisoners, shackled to a stone cell wall,
ragged, stringy limbs and neck in irons,
yet were able to move their lips.
Eyes darting toward his cell mate,
“Now here’s my plan,” one said.

No other image so hit home
until this year when, during floods
in the drowned mid-west, a woman,
one gnarled hand clasping bathrobe shut,
the other grasping rail, stood
on her porch. Water had risen
to the second step when a polar bear,
on a lone ice shelf, floated
toward her house.

                    The bear looked up.
Their eyes then met
in what must have been
a wry acknowledgement
of all we face
on this sad sphere.

If either spoke of a plan,
                       I didn’t hear it.

The Farmer’s Rink

Not nearly enough water to drown in.
Just a thin translucent crust, a filet of ice
overlaying the farmer’s last rectangular plot
of purple nightshades—his autumn beds
already forgotten

by our suburban kids who are skating and skidding
along the rim, or in & out of the center;
their stainless steel blades chipping away at
the rink’s hard little pits and potholes,
with the same sound a garden spade must make

as it strikes a buried stone. A sixth-grade girl goes tracing
with sleek figures the farmer’s earthen furrows
submerged, and then yokes her jacket-padded arm
onto the small shoulder of her younger brother

who is suddenly floundering; and the farmer watches
this rescue from his kitchen window, its seams caulked
tightly against freezing piles of tiny white scales
soon to be settled. From the corners of the glass pane
to the brink of the beveled ledge.
